Manchester United secured a significant step towards the revamped group stage of the Women’s Champions League on Wednesday. They achieved a convincing 4-0 victory over PSV Eindhoven in Stockholm. Despite the impressive scoreline, the match, which began at midday, drew a modest crowd of only 387 spectators to the 30,000-capacity stadium.
The goals, including a hat-trick by Elisabeth Terland and one from Celin Bizet Donnum, were celebrated by a small group of traveling fans. Their cheers resonated throughout the largely empty Stockholm Arena. Terland acknowledged the early kickoff, stating that the team was accustomed to similar timings in their domestic league and had to adapt.
The match was part of a four-team mini-tournament designed to determine which clubs would earn a place in the 18-team group stage. Nine clubs, including the reigning champions Arsenal, have already qualified directly. The remaining teams must compete through up to three rounds of qualifiers.
Manchester United is now set to face Stockholm's Hammarby in Saturday's final. Hammarby secured their place by defeating FC Metalist 1925 Kharkiv of Ukraine in a thrilling 5-4 match later in the evening. The winners of the mini-tournament will advance to the final qualifying round, while the losers of the final and the third-placed team will enter the inaugural Women’s Europa Cup.
Hammarby coach Martin Sjogren expressed enthusiasm for the new format, believing it benefits smaller clubs. He highlighted the advantage of playing different opponents only once instead of the previous format of double-headers within four-team groups.
United fan Fiona Lynch, who was among the few supporters present at Wednesday's early game, expressed her excitement about the club’s European journey. She emphasized the importance of experiencing these opportunities as a fan, recognizing that such moments are memorable. Lynch plans to attend future matches if her work schedule allows. She will remain in Stockholm for the conclusion of the mini-tournament on Saturday evening, as Manchester United aims to secure their place in the next phase of the Women’s Champions League.
