South Korea Introduces Nationwide Ban on Mobile Phones in Schools

On August 27, South Korea's legislature approved a Bill that will prohibit the use of mobile phones and other digital gadgets in school classrooms across the nation, slated to take effect in March of the following year. This move positions South Korea as the latest nation to curtail smartphone and social media access among minors, following similar initiatives in Australia and the Netherlands, where such bans have been linked to improved student focus.

According to statistics from the US-based Pew Research Center, South Korea stands out as one of the most digitally integrated countries globally, with a staggering 99% of its population online and a smartphone ownership rate of 98%. This high level of connectivity correlates with increasing concerns about the influence of social media on the youth, which has prompted lawmakers to act decisively.

Lawmaker Cho Jung-hun, a supporter of the Bill from the opposition People Power Party, expressed deep concerns over what he described as an alarming level of social media addiction among the young people in the country. He noted the troubling trend of students staying up late on platforms like Instagram, which has detrimental effects on their well-being, as evidenced by a survey revealing that 37% of middle and high school students reported social media's significant impact on their lives, and 22% experienced anxiety when unable to access their accounts.

Although many South Korean schools have previously implemented their own restrictions on smartphone usage, this new legislation formally establishes a nationwide standard. It is worth noting that exceptions will still be made for students with disabilities and for educational purposes. However, not all are in agreement with the ban; certain youth advocacy groups have criticized the decision, arguing that it infringes on the human rights of children.

While it may be inconvenient, this legislation is vital for combating the growing concern of social media addiction in youth.

I support this bill wholeheartedly. Social media can be so distracting, and students need to learn how to engage in their studies!

This is a fantastic move! Kids are glued to their phones, and it's about time we prioritized their focus in classrooms.

The government should focus on real issues like mental health support instead of trying to control how kids use their phones.

It's great to see South Korea take steps to combat the negative impacts of social media on youth. Education first!
