the first was a 4.1 magnitude earthquake that struck Segamat on August 24 at 6:13 AM, followed by a subsequent tremor of 2.8 magnitude in Kluang at 9 AM.
The seismic activity is linked to the Mersing Fault Zone, one of the principal fault lines across the Malaysian peninsula, alongside others such as Bukit Tinggi and Kuala Lumpur. MetMalaysia has reiterated that it will keep a close watch on further developments related to these earthquakes. The director-general of the agency, Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip, underscored that there is no cause for concern, as the recent tremors were minor in scale.
So far, the Segamat District Disaster Management Committee has not reported any casualties, injuries, or damage to properties in the region. Security and relevant agencies continue to monitor the situation to ensure public safety within the Segamat district. The initial quake on Sunday struck fear among many residents, with reports of loud noises and instances where vehicles were visibly shaking, as captured by CCTV footage. The subsequent tremor, which was less intense, was also felt in similar areas, with its epicenter located 28 kilometers northwest of Kluang. MetMalaysia confirmed that both quakes originated near the Mersing Fault Zone.

What’s the plan if a larger earthquake strikes? Waiting until it happens is not acceptable.

Minor earthquakes can still be concerning! We should be worried about what they might lead to in the future.
