FDA Approves Updated COVID-19 Vaccines with Targeted Access

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorized updated COVID-19 vaccines on Wednesday, August 27th. This year, the FDA is focusing access to the updated vaccines on specific populations. Individuals aged 65 and older are eligible for the updated shots, while access for younger individuals is primarily limited to those with underlying health risks. This represents a change from previous years when most Americans were eligible for the vaccines.

The approved vaccines are produced by Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech, Moderna, and Novavax in collaboration with Sanofi. A spokesperson from the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) clarified that the decision does not restrict access to the vaccines. They emphasized that the vaccines remain available to those who choose them, in consultation with their healthcare providers.

Pfizer announced that the emergency use authorization for its COVID vaccine for children under 5 has been rescinded. This could potentially limit access for certain pediatric groups. Moderna stated that its updated Spikevax shot has been approved for individuals aged six months and older who have at least one underlying health condition. This updated vaccine is expected to be available in the coming days.

The updated Comirnaty vaccine from Pfizer and BioNTech has been cleared for individuals aged 5 to 64 with high-risk conditions. Novavax's vaccine has been approved under the same criteria for those aged 12 to 64. Regardless of age, all three vaccines remain accessible to individuals aged 65 and older without any restrictions.
