The holders of the League Cup, Newcastle United, will commence their title defense with a home match against Bradford City, a team from the third tier. Liverpool, who were the runners-up in the previous season, are set to play Southampton at home.
Newcastle's victory over Liverpool marked the end of a seven-decade-long wait for a domestic trophy. Due to their involvement in either the Champions League or Europa League, Newcastle, along with other Premier League clubs in those competitions, received a bye into the third round.
Manchester City will be traveling to Huddersfield Town, a League One team, while Chelsea will face Lincoln City. Arsenal is scheduled to play at Port Vale.
Grimsby Town, who caused a major upset in the second round by eliminating Manchester United, a team that has won the competition six times, will now play Sheffield Wednesday, a team from the second tier.
Brentford will host Aston Villa, and Wolverhampton Wanderers will play against Everton.
The third-round matches are scheduled to take place during the weeks commencing September 15th and September 22nd.

Too many dead rubbers. I'll only be interested if Grimsby cause another major upset.

Grimsby were clearly a fluke! That Manchester United win was a one-off. They will likely lose to Sheffield.

Wolves vs Everton, two teams looking to build momentum; an exciting fixture

Port Vale vs Arsenal? Expecting a lot of boring possession and a 3-0 victory.
