As the UK enters spider season, which typically runs from early September to mid-October, many households are bracing themselves for increased spider activity. Spiders begin to move indoors during this time, seeking shelter and mates. A warm and dry summer can lead to an earlier start to this annual migration. Spiders can enter homes through various entry points, including cracks, gaps, open windows and doors, or even be brought in on items like laundry or plants.
To combat this, experts suggest using peppermint as a natural deterrent. The strong scent of peppermint is disliked by spiders. Placing peppermint leaves or peppermint oil in corners of rooms, near windows, and by doors can help keep these creatures away. Peppermint is also a cost-effective solution.
Growing peppermint plants is another effective method. Other plants, such as lavender, mint, and lemon balm, can also deter spiders. These plants should be placed in well-lit areas and properly watered to ensure their effectiveness.
For a practical approach, fresh mint leaves can be placed at entry points like windows and doors, and in room corners. Alternatively, a homemade spray can be created by chopping mint leaves and mixing them with water. A spray solution of peppermint oil and water is also an effective alternative. Experts recommend a mixture of water, white vinegar, and peppermint oil, which can be sprayed on windowsills, entryways, and areas where spiders are found. While this mixture may not immediately eliminate existing spiders, it will help prevent new ones from entering.

Peppermint? Tried that! Spiders in my place are clearly connoisseurs of fine herbs, because it didn’t work at all!

I'm allergic to strong scents like peppermint. This suggestion is a NO-GO for my health.

I've started putting peppermint leaves out, and I've definitely seen fewer spiders. Simple and effective!

Aren't spiders actually helpful? They eat other bugs. Maybe having some is a good thing after all.

I will try this, even just for the peace of mind. Spiders freak me out, and this gives me something to do.
