A significant wildfire at Langdale Moor has led to the evacuation of a fertiliser mine in the North York Moors National Park due to safety issues, as firefighters work tirelessly to extinguish the flames. As smoke spreads through the area, emergency services have issued warnings for residents to keep their doors and windows shut to avoid inhaling the smoke. The fire initially ignited near the RAF Fylingdales ballistic missile early warning base on August 11, prompting the company Anglo-American, which operates Woodsmith Mine, to remove most staff on-site except for a limited crew as a precaution.
Areas surrounding the mine, including segments of the A171 road from Robin Hood's Bay to Cloughton, have been temporarily closed because of smoke hazards. The North York Moors National Park authority has further warned the public to avoid the vicinity entirely. Local MP Alison Hume remarked on the challenges posed by the blaze, suggesting that it could persist for weeks or even months as it has spread into the peat beneath the surface. This underground fire poses a risk of reignition, complicating containment efforts.
Local farmers and gamekeepers are assisting emergency services in combating the wildfire, with the North York Moors Moorland Organisation reporting that gamekeepers are attempting a technique known as "back burning" to prevent further spread. Despite these efforts, fluctuating wind conditions are hindering progress. The situation reflects a broader environmental crisis, as a hot and dry summer has adversely affected various regions in the UK, leading to decreased crop yields, impacts on livestock feed, and heightened wildfire risks.

The damage to the peat will take years to recover, an unimaginable loss for the region.

It's terrible, but the authorities seem to be handling this to the best of their ability.

The environmental impact is substantial but at least we see people acting upon it.

How long is this going to go on? We need clean air! This is unacceptable.
