A video released by the Department of Homeland Security on Monday features Kilmar Abrego Garcia speaking the Spanish phrase "gobierno corrupto," which translates to "corrupt government." The footage shows the Salvadoran man restrained and escorted by someone wearing a vest that identifies them as "POLICE ICE."
The DHS post accompanying the video on X stated that Abrego Garcia does not belong in the United States and will be removed. The footage is believed to be from the arrest of Abrego Garcia by ICE on Monday.
According to a DHS press release, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers arrested Abrego Garcia in Maryland at an ICE processing center on Monday due to federal immigration violations. The press release also mentioned that Abrego Garcia is being processed for removal from the U.S. to Uganda. This deportation is currently the subject of a legal dispute.
A senior DHS official, as quoted in the release, stated that Abrego Garcia is a criminal illegal alien from El Salvador and a threat to public safety. The official further asserted that the administration would not allow Abrego Garcia, described as an MS-13 gang member, human trafficker, serial domestic abuser, and child predator, to continue terrorizing American citizens.
However, both Politico and the Washington Post have reported that Abrego Garcia has no criminal convictions. A court filing from earlier this year disputed claims of his association with MS-13, with his legal team stating that he is not a member of or affiliated with any criminal or street gang.

Protect American citizens first. That's the government's duty, and this is a step forward.

Criminal Illegal Alien" is a dehumanizing label. This man deserves due process and a fair assessment of his case, not a headline and a ticket to Uganda.

The use of inflammatory language (child predator, domestic abuser) without proof is irresponsible and possibly libelous.

The fact that the DHS is using the Spanish phrase, knowing who will hear them, is beyond insensitive.

The timing, immediately following the comment "corrupt government", is awfully convenient. Seems clearly designed to silence dissent.
