Union representatives from the Cincinnati Police Department have emphatically expressed their disapproval of Mayor Aftab Pureval by issuing a unanimous vote of no confidence. This decision by the Cincinnati Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) was influenced by recent events, particularly a violent altercation on July 26 that garnered national attention, which they believe reflects decisive failures in the mayor’s leadership over the past month.
FOP President Ken Kober emphasized that the decision sends a strong message regarding the administration's shortcomings in providing necessary support to law enforcement. The union criticized the mayor for various political interferences, which they claim have contributed to a deterioration of public safety, have hindered police operations, and have fostered distrust within the community.
The FOP articulated their concerns about the delayed response from Mayor Pureval following the high-profile brawl, highlighting a troubling gap of three days between the event and his first public statement. The incident, which occurred on a Saturday morning while the mayor was on vacation in Vancouver, has raised significant questions about his commitment to addressing police and community issues promptly.
In addition, the mayor's decision to direct city officials to pursue charges against a victim, Alex Tchervinski, has drawn sharp criticism from the union. They contend that the action was taken primarily to mitigate racial tensions and was politically motivated, undermining the integrity of the administration and law enforcement.
Kober condemned what he described as blatant political maneuvering by the mayor's office, asserting that the disregard for law enforcement principles in favor of "cheap political points" damages the city's reputation and calls for accountability among its leaders.
Moreover, the police union condemned the mayor's failure to address the actions of a city contractor involved in another police investigation. As the public grapples with the fallout from the violent assault that has led to charges against multiple suspects, the call for competent leadership remains critical for restoring confidence among both the police force and the community.

The police should focus on their job instead of making political statements. Their priorities seem misplaced.

This is just another example of the police trying to shift blame onto the mayor. Instead of taking responsibility, they play the victim.

It’s disappointing to see the police union forget about community trust. They need to own up to their part in the failures!

The trust between law enforcement and the community is fragile. The mayor's actions only make it worse.

Why does the police union think it can dictate how the mayor should lead? The public voted him in, not them!
