A Ukrainian woman who had fled the war in her homeland was fatally stabbed in Charlotte on Friday, according to police reports. The victim was identified as 23-year-old Iryna Zarutska.
Following the news of her death, a GoFundMe campaign was initiated to support Zarutska's family. The fundraiser, created on behalf of Zarutska’s Ukrainian aunt, Valeria, has garnered significant support, raising over $12,000. The campaign described the tragedy, noting that Zarutska had recently arrived in the United States seeking refuge and a fresh start.
The incident occurred at the East/West Boulevard light rail station near Camden Road in South End. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police reported that Zarutska was stabbed around 10:30 p.m. Upon arrival, officers found her at the scene, where she was pronounced dead.
Decarlos Brown, 34, was apprehended shortly after the stabbing and was later charged with first-degree murder. Police confirmed the attack took place on a train and that Brown and Zarutska were not acquainted. Court records indicate Brown has a history of arrests dating back to 2011, including charges of felony larceny, robbery with a dangerous weapon, and communicating threats.
Zarutska’s death has prompted renewed discussions about public safety in Charlotte. Members of the Charlotte City Council expressed concerns about violence on the city’s transit system. During a council meeting, a member requested information on immediate steps being taken to ensure the safety of riders and operators.
