Reform UK has announced a plan to deport 600,000 asylum seekers from Britain, citing a need to prevent potential "civil disorder." The party's leader, Nigel Farage, outlined the proposal, which includes significant changes to the UK's legal framework regarding human rights and international agreements.
The core of the plan involves withdrawing from the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), repealing the Human Rights Act, and disregarding international treaties that currently prevent forced deportations. The ECHR has often been used to block the deportation of migrants considered to be in the country unlawfully. Farage described the situation as an "invasion" and stated that the plan, named "Operation Restoring Justice," is the only way to stop small boats crossing the English Channel. He suggested that migrants intercepted at sea should be detained and deported immediately.
The Labour Party has criticized the announcement, with Chairwoman Ellie Reeves stating that the plan lacks detail and fails to address practical, financial, or ethical concerns. The announcement comes after weeks of protests related to mass migration and crimes allegedly committed by some asylum seekers. In 2024, Britain received a record number of asylum applications, with many applicants originating from Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, and Bangladesh.
Immigration has become a primary concern for voters, surpassing the economy in recent polls. Despite holding only a small number of seats in Parliament, Reform UK is currently leading in surveys of voting intentions. Housing Minister Matthew Pennycook has dismissed the proposals as ineffective "gimmicks." Opponents of the plan, including several charities, have argued that it would lead to Britain abandoning its human rights commitments.

Detaining and deporting migrants without due process is a violation of their basic rights.

This plan won't address the root causes of migration; it's just a temporary fix for a complex issue.

Migrants contribute to our society in countless ways. This plan reflects ignorance and prejudice!

What happened to Britain being a safe haven? This proposal is shameful and must be condemned!

We must ensure the rule of law is upheld. This proposal could restore faith in our legal system.
