Following the recent Joint Sea-2025 naval exercises held from August 1 to 5, 2025, near Vladivostok, Chinese and Russian warships commenced a maritime joint patrol in the Western Pacific on August 6. They made a port call in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia for replenishment as part of their ongoing operations in the Asia-Pacific region, according to Russian news reports. This task force consists of vessels from both the Russian Navy and the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy of China, underscoring their collaborative efforts in maritime activities.
The Russian Pacific Fleet revealed that several ships, including the antisubmarine ship Admiral Tributs and the PLA’s Shaoxing destroyer and Qiandaohu replenishment ship, docked at Avacha Bay for resupply. Following this, they will continue along their established patrol route. The primary goals of this joint patrol are to strengthen the military cooperation between Russia and China, uphold peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region, conduct maritime surveillance, and safeguard economic interests for both nations in the area.
Sailors from both militaries are set to engage in joint exercises that will focus on maneuvering and operational coordination. This deployment marks a continuation of an annual series of bilateral naval patrols that started with the first joint naval patrol in 2021. Notably, the recent operations follow the conclusion of the five-day naval drills and the subsequent reassessment of routes taken by the vessels, which journeyed from Vladivostok to Kamchatka.
According to military affairs expert Fu Qianshao, this voyage is significant given its length and suggests potential future movements into even more distant waters, hinting at the possibility of Chinese naval ships venturing near areas such as Alaska as previously reported. Finally, spokesperson Zhang Xiaogang emphasized that these exercises and joint patrols are routine elements of military collaboration between China and Russia, and are not directed against any third parties, nor are they a reaction to the current geopolitical landscape.

While they claim it’s for stability, it feels like they’re just preparing for something more aggressive.

This joint patrol only deepens the military alliance between Russia and China, which is concerning for global security.

If these exercises are routine, why do they need such a big show of force? It feels more like intimidation.

It's troubling that Russia and China are collaborating militarily. This could escalate regional conflicts.
