Shanghai Doctors Achieve Medical First in Complex Spine Surgery

A team of doctors in Shanghai has performed a groundbreaking surgery for a severe cervical spine dissociation, a condition similar to a head-body separation. This rare procedure involved the innovative use of auxiliary plates to enhance the stability of the reconstructed cervical spine, a first for such extreme cases.

The patient had suffered a critical neck injury from a robotic arm, resulting in extensive damage to his cervical spine. He experienced high paraplegia and cardiac arrest, requiring emergency resuscitation to regain vital signs. Imaging revealed a severe dislocation of the cervical spine, posing a significant risk of hemorrhage-induced shock or fatal cerebral infarction.

The surgical team, led by Chen Huajiang, director of the cervical spine surgery ward at Shanghai Changzheng Hospital, assembled a multidisciplinary team to address the complex situation. They meticulously assessed the patient's injuries and developed comprehensive contingency plans for potential intraoperative risks, such as massive hemorrhage.

Despite the patient's unstable condition, the team utilized their expertise in anatomy and microsurgery to remove hematomas, address adhesions and deformities, and precisely realign the displaced cervical structures. They also innovatively incorporated auxiliary plates to provide additional stability to the reconstructed spine.

The surgical team faced unprecedented challenges during the procedure, relying on their accumulated experience to make critical decisions, such as screw trajectory selection and ensuring secure vertebral fixation. The delicate nature of the surgery required them to navigate the confined space with precision, minimizing the risk of secondary injuries to surrounding blood vessels and nerves.

The surgery was successfully completed in approximately three hours. The patient quickly regained consciousness, and his vital signs stabilized. He is now able to sit up with assistance, showing positive signs of neurological recovery, and has begun structured rehabilitation.
