Chengdu Hosts Successful 12th World Games, Showcasing New Sports and Celebrating Inclusivity

The 12th World Games concluded in Chengdu, China with a closing ceremony. The Chinese delegation secured the top position in both the gold medal and overall medal standings. During the event, a total of 18 world records were broken. Athletes from 52 countries and regions won gold medals, and competitors from 81 countries and regions reached the podium, setting a new record for the number of medal-winning nations and regions in World Games history.

The Chengdu World Games introduced new sports such as drone racing, wakesurfing, parkour, and ultimate frisbee. Dragon boat racing and wushu made their official debut as competition events. The president of the International World Games Association (IWGA) stated that traditional sports like dragon boat racing and wushu will continue to be part of the program. He emphasized the open approach of the Games, incorporating both traditional and emerging sports.

Several Olympic events also made their debut at this edition of the World Games. Trampoline, sport climbing, flag football, softball, lacrosse, and squash are all scheduled to be official competitions at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. These previously niche sports are gaining new urban attention through the Games, exploring paths for broader development. The World Games provide a platform to bring these sports into the public eye, increasing their chances of transitioning from a "small circle" to a mainstream trend.

The Games also saw the integration of para-sports. Para freediving and para jiu-jitsu were fully integrated into the World Games, with athletes receiving the same medals as other competitors. This highlighted their inclusion as full members of the World Games family.

The IWGA signed a memorandum of understanding with Chengdu Sport University to establish a sports research and promotion center aimed at advancing non-Olympic sports in China and worldwide. The event involved a large competition management team, technical officials, venue operations staff, and numerous volunteers.

The closing ceremony focused on integrating the venue with its natural environment, reflecting the local culture and hospitality. The ceremony featured mixed athlete entrances, creating a lively atmosphere. It also included a tribute to volunteers and incorporated elements reflecting Chengdu's local culture. The closing ceremony aimed to provide athletes with lasting memories of the World Games.

The focus on local culture feels like window dressing when the core issues of fairness and competition aren't necessarily addressed.
