Typhoon Kajiki Impacts Southern China, Prompts Rescue Efforts and Rainfall Warnings

In Sanya, Hainan Province, rescue teams and local volunteers worked together to clear roads blocked by fallen trees after Typhoon Kajiki on August 25, 2025. The typhoon brought heavy rainfall to the city.

Despite the typhoon passing offshore, China's meteorological authority warned of its continued impact on Hainan Island and the southern region, while also forecasting rainfall in the northern areas of the country. The National Meteorological Center (NMC) issued a yellow typhoon alert and a blue rainstorm alert due to Kajiki, the 13th typhoon of the year.

According to a press conference, no typhoon-related deaths were reported in Hainan Province as of Monday morning. Approximately 102,500 people were affected. Cities and counties such as Sanya, Ledong, and Lingshui experienced disruptions to roads, water supply, power, and communication, along with fallen trees and localized flooding.

A resident of Sanya described the strong winds and the toppling of outdoor delivery shelves and trees. She stocked up on supplies due to potential power and water outages. While there were brief power outages, electricity was quickly restored. The residential property management took precautions, and the overall response from authorities was considered effective.

The province has increased coordination to carry out emergency rescue and disaster relief. Typhoon Kajiki is the strongest to hit Sanya since meteorological records began. Local authorities mobilized nearly 5,000 personnel to clear roadblocks and repair infrastructure. Over 770,000 units of emergency supplies were allocated to support affected areas.

As of Monday morning, 40,772 people were evacuated, with a focus on fishermen and vulnerable groups. Safety measures were in place to prevent evacuees from returning to dangerous areas. The city is monitoring conditions and working to restore normal life.

A tourist from Guangdong Province reported that the rain had eased by Monday afternoon, and soldiers were clearing debris. Rescue teams and local volunteers provided emergency food supplies. She received text alerts about the typhoon, and traffic police were managing traffic.

As the impact of Typhoon Kajiki weakened, ports and airports in Guangdong and Hainan provinces made adjustments. Three ports in Haikou, Hainan, resumed operations, and Sanya Phoenix International Airport returned to normal.

The NMC forecast moderate to heavy rain across parts of multiple provinces in northern China from Tuesday to Thursday, with potential for intense rainfall and severe weather. Heavy rain was also expected in other regions from Monday morning to Tuesday morning. Accumulated rainfall in affected regions is expected to range from 30 to 60 millimeters, with localized areas reaching higher amounts.

770,000 units of emergency supplies... what exactly constitutes a 'unit'? The details always matter.
