On Monday, U.S. President Donald Trump announced the nomination of E.J. Antoni as the new director of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), filling the vacancy left by Erika McEntarfer, who was terminated shortly after the bureau published disappointing employment figures. Trump expressed confidence in Antoni's ability to provide accurate data through a post on Truth Social, but it is important to note that his appointment requires Senate confirmation.
The decision to fire McEntarfer occurred on August 1, just hours after the release of job growth statistics for July, which were below expectations, along with significant downward revisions for the previous two months. Trump claimed that McEntarfer had altered data for political motivations. E.J. Antoni, who currently serves as the chief economist at the Heritage Foundation, is recognized as a conservative economist known for questioning the practices of the BLS.
In a recent post on X, Antoni stated that improvements in data collection and dissemination are necessary to restore faith in the bureau, emphasizing the need for accurate and timely information. However, his nomination has sparked criticism, particularly from Jason Furman, a Harvard University economics professor and former chair of the White House Council of Economic Advisers. Furman contended that Antoni, being an extreme partisan, lacks the qualifications essential for the role and that his nomination represents a departure from the tradition of appointing nonpartisan experts to the BLS.

The BLS should be led by someone whose only agenda is accurate reporting, not someone known for their extreme partisan views!

It's ironic that Antoni talks about restoring faith in data when his own record shows extreme bias. This is not the direction we need to go!

Finally, someone who understands the importance of accurate data and isn’t afraid to challenge the establishment! Go, E.J.! 🎉

Trump knows what he’s doing by appointing a conservative economist. It's time to challenge the status quo at the BLS!

Jason Furman is right—Antoni's nomination is a blatant political move that disregards the importance of impartiality in economic data collection.
