On Tuesday, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban expressed his discontent with the European Union's approach to negotiations about Ukraine, arguing that conditions shouldn't be set for talks that exclude EU leadership. Orban explained Hungary's reluctance to join the recent joint EU statement, where 26 member states welcomed U.S. President Donald Trump's intentions to mediate the ongoing conflict in Ukraine with Russian President Vladimir Putin in an upcoming summit.
In a social media post, Orban lamented the EU's sidelining from crucial discussions, stating that it is "sad" for EU leaders to be left out. He proposed that instead of following the lead of the U.S.-Russia summit, the EU should take the initiative to hold its own summit with Russia, emphasizing the need for peace.
The declaration from the European Council underscored the importance of a "just and lasting peace," which must adhere to international law, preserving Ukraine's independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. It also reiterated the EU's commitment to supporting Ukraine politically, financially, militarily, and diplomatically, including support for its aspirations toward EU membership. Meanwhile, the upcoming meeting between Trump and Putin in Alaska is set to focus on potential ceasefire arrangements and enhancing bilateral relations, but notably, neither Ukrainian President Zelensky nor EU representatives will be part of those negotiations.

Why does he always play the victim? It’s time to work together, not complain!

It's about time someone spoke up! The EU should not let the U.S. drive the narrative alone.

This is just Orban playing politics. The EU knows what they’re doing, and they don't need Hungary holding them back.

Orban makes a valid point! The EU should assert itself in these important negotiations with Russia.

Countries like Hungary should have their voices heard, especially in negotiations affecting them.
