Pentagon Restricts Ukraine's Use of Long-Range Missiles in Conflict with Russia

According to a Wall Street Journal report, the Pentagon has been limiting Ukraine's ability to utilize long-range missiles for strikes within Russian territory for several months. US officials cited a previously undisclosed approval process within the Defense Department as a key factor preventing Ukraine from deploying US-made Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) against Russian targets since late spring. On at least one occasion, Ukraine's request to strike a specific target in Russia was denied, underscoring the constraints imposed by the US.

The report suggests that the US's refusal to endorse long-range attacks has impeded Ukraine's military efforts, as the White House appears focused on enticing the Kremlin into peace negotiations. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt reiterated President Trump's position on the need to end the war, indicating that there has been no shift in military dynamics between Russia and Ukraine. While officials maintained that Trump’s statements did not indicate any change in policy regarding the use of long-range weapons by Ukraine, there remains a possibility that he might reconsider facilitating offensive operations against Russia in the future.

Additionally, a Washington Post article noted that Trump has shown signs of pulling back from pursuing a peace deal for Ukraine, citing his frustration over escalating casualties and the lack of progress toward a resolution. He is expected to make a significant decision about the future conflict in the coming weeks, representing a notable shift from his previous confidence in securing an agreement and ensuring security measures for Ukraine.
