On Wednesday morning, the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office held a regular press conference. Spokesperson Zhu Fenglian addressed reporters' questions concerning recent cross-Straits topics.
The spokesperson was asked about commemorative activities marking the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, as well as the 80th anniversary of the recovery of Taiwan. Zhu emphasized the significance of Taiwan's recovery as a major achievement of the war's victory, a triumph achieved through the struggles and sacrifices of all Chinese people, including those on the island. This event is worthy of commemoration by people on both sides of the Taiwan Straits.
Zhu highlighted several events. From July 30 to August 6, a cross-Straits reporting event took place in Hunan Province. Journalists from various media outlets visited historical sites, interviewed veterans and historians, and participated in a memorial ceremony. They explored the history of the War of Resistance and reported on achievements in rural revitalization and technological development.
Another event, the “Honoring the Martyrs of the War of Resistance and Revisiting Chinese Culture—2025 Hubei-Taiwan Teacher-Student History and Culture Exchange,” occurred in Hubei Province from July 18 to 25. Teachers and students from both sides paid tribute at historical monuments and engaged in dialogues on ancient and modern culture, including Chinese history and the War of Resistance.
Zhu also mentioned that many people from Taiwan have recently watched the film Dead To Rights on the Chinese mainland. The film, based on real evidence of the Nanjing Massacre, uses historical photos to depict the resistance of ordinary Chinese people. It serves as a reminder to remember history and be self-reliant.
Zhu expressed the hope that all people on the island will join in remembering the history of the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, safeguarding the victory of Taiwan's recovery and return to the motherland, upholding national righteousness, opposing "Taiwan independence" and foreign interference, promoting the reunification of the motherland, and realizing the dream of national rejuvenation.

The government should focus on current issues rather than revisiting conflicts long past.

The mention of anti-fascism is ironic coming from a regime that restricts freedoms and promotes censorship.

The narrative is one-sided; it fails to include Taiwanese voices who may not support these commemorative activities.

This type of rhetoric only increases tension; Taiwan deserves to celebrate its own history in its own way.

Calling for an end to "Taiwan independence" is a threat to Taiwan's sovereignty and democratic freedoms.
