Dovedale, a renowned beauty spot in the UK, is facing a growing problem with litter. Volunteers are regularly tasked with removing significant amounts of rubbish, including soiled nappies, which poses a threat to the local wildlife. The valley, managed by the National Trust, is situated in the Peak District and draws over a million visitors annually.
The National Trust has been monitoring the amount of litter collected in the area since 2020. The peak was recorded in 2020, with an average of 4.6 bags of litter collected per day. The year 2023 saw the lowest average at 1.04 bags per day. However, the amount of litter appears to be increasing again, with averages of 1.52 bags per day in 2024 and 1.92 bags per day so far in 2025. Despite the current figures being lower than in 2020, officials are urging visitors to help maintain the beauty of Dovedale.
Craig Best, General Manager for the National Trust in the Peak District, highlighted the popularity of Dovedale and its Stepping Stones, which are a public right of way. He acknowledged the influx of visitors from across the country. However, he also noted the challenge of littering, with not all visitors disposing of their rubbish properly. The litter problem includes items such as food packaging, dirty nappies, bottles, shoes, and plastic beach balls. This litter not only detracts from the scenery but also harms the environment and endangers the local wildlife.
The National Trust is actively working to address the issue. Staff and volunteers regularly conduct litter picks and encourage visitors to leave no trace. They utilize on-site signage, social media, and website content to promote responsible waste disposal and raise awareness of the countryside code. The Trust provides bins in the main car park and distributes bin bags to visitors on busy days. The increased number of visitors, possibly due to warmer weather, has contributed to the rise in litter. However, the Trust believes that more litter is being removed by visitors than is being left behind.

If you can't respect nature, you should stay home. There are no excuses for littering!

It's embarrassing for our country that we can't keep our natural spaces clean. Step it up, people!
