Rayner's Bill Blocks Khan's Parliamentary Bid, Sparking Leadership Accusations

Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner has introduced legislation that would prevent individuals from simultaneously holding the position of mayor and serving as a Member of Parliament. This move effectively blocks London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan from running for a seat in the House of Commons while remaining in his current role. The proposed bill makes it improbable for him to secure a Commons seat before the next general election. Rayner's department has stated that the purpose of this change is to allow mayors to dedicate their full attention to serving their local communities.

A Conservative strategist has accused Rayner of political maneuvering, suggesting she is targeting potential rivals for the Labour leadership. The strategist claimed that Rayner is prioritizing party politics over the needs of the country. Sir Sadiq Khan is currently serving his third term as London Mayor, having been re-elected in May of the previous year. He previously represented the constituency of Tooting in Parliament from 2005 to 2016.

Sir Sadiq Khan has previously stated that he has no interest in becoming the Labour leader or returning to the House of Commons. Rayner has also faced accusations of attempting to undermine Health Secretary Wes Streeting's leadership prospects. She is removing a restriction that would have prevented organizations from registering as both campaign groups and political parties simultaneously, a move that could potentially benefit pro-Gaza candidates. A spokesperson for Rayner's department has explained that the changes aim to ensure consistency, mirroring the existing rule that prevents mayors who are also police and crime commissioners from serving as MPs, allowing all mayors to concentrate on their demanding roles.
