In Bangkok, Thailand, the suspended Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra appeared before a court on Thursday. The hearing concerned allegations of an ethics law violation related to her handling of a border dispute with Cambodia. This case could potentially lead to her removal from office.
The accusations against Paetongtarn stem from a phone call she made on June 15 with Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen. The call addressed tensions over disputed territory between the two nations. Critics contend that she failed in her duties by not adequately defending Thailand's interests during the conversation. Following the call, the two countries engaged in armed border clashes in late July, resulting in numerous casualties and the displacement of a large population.
Specifically, critics have accused Paetongtarn of appeasing Hun Sen, the former Cambodian leader, and damaging Thailand's image. This was allegedly done by referring to him with a term of endearment while seemingly criticizing a Thai army general. The situation escalated when Hun Sen, a long-time friend of Paetongtarn's father, leaked the call, sparking public outrage in Thailand. While Paetongtarn apologized, she maintained that her comments were a negotiating strategy and did not harm Thailand.
The Constitutional Court unanimously decided to review a petition accusing Paetongtarn of an ethics breach. The court also voted to suspend her from her duties on July 1 until a ruling is issued. Her testimony on Thursday was conducted in private.
Adding to the legal challenges faced by the Shinawatra family, Paetongtarn's father, Thaksin Shinawatra, is awaiting a verdict from Bangkok’s Criminal Court. The court will decide whether he insulted Thailand’s monarchy, an offense carrying a potential prison sentence. This case is based on a 2025 interview he gave while in South Korea. Thaksin, who was ousted from power in a 2006 military coup, previously faced convictions for conflict of interest and abuse of power. He avoided imprisonment by fleeing the country and returned to Thailand in 2023. He served a short time in a hospital suite before being paroled and pardoned.

Let’s not punish her for trying to maintain peace with Cambodia. Dialogue is vital for stability!

Appreciating Hun Sen over Thai generals? That's a major disgrace! We need a leader who respects our military.

Let’s not jump to conclusions! A single phone call doesn't define her entire leadership. Everyone deserves a fair hearing.

Public outrage is justified! We won’t tolerate leaders who put their interests before our country’s safety.

If she really believes her comments were a negotiation tactic, she is utterly clueless about diplomacy.
