Trump Threatens Military Deployment in Baltimore, Sparks Criticism from Maryland Officials

Former President Donald Trump issued a threat to deploy the military to Baltimore to address crime, mirroring a recent deployment in Washington, D.C. He made the statement on Truth Social, referencing the Democratic governors of Maryland and California. This follows a pattern of threats to send troops to various cities across the country.

Maryland Governor Wes Moore responded to Trump's comments, stating that the former president should join him in Baltimore to address the issues directly. Moore emphasized the need for leaders to work with communities on the ground. Trump's approach contrasts with the typical use of the National Guard, which is usually reserved for natural disasters and civil unrest.

Trump's actions, including the deployment of National Guard troops to D.C., have drawn criticism. Critics view these moves as politically motivated overreach. Data from D.C. police indicates a decrease in violent crime compared to the previous year, despite the deployment.

In his Truth Social post, Trump also criticized Moore's remarks and suggested he would prefer Moore address the crime situation before visiting. Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott has reported a decrease in homicides and nonfatal shootings this year. Moore has stated that he would not authorize the use of Maryland National Guard forces for missions he deems not critical or aligned with the state's needs.

Additionally, Trump threatened to reconsider federal funding for the replacement of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which collapsed in 2024. Moore condemned this threat, warning of potential damage to the national economy and Maryland. Several other political figures, including Senators Chris Van Hollen and Angela Alsobrooks, and Representative Johnny Olszewski, also criticized Trump's comments, expressing concerns about his approach to public safety and the use of military force.

Trump has also indicated intentions to deploy the National Guard to other cities, including Chicago and New York. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker responded by accusing Trump of attempting to manufacture a crisis and politicize the military.
