Shanghai is positioning itself to capitalize on the growing "happiness economy." This is evidenced by a significant increase in the construction of new theme parks and the enhancement of existing ones. This trend is according to tourism and industry experts.
Shanghai is already recognized as the theme park capital of China. This summer, the city welcomed the opening of the country's first Legoland. Further major projects are planned, including the world's largest Peppa Pig theme park, which is scheduled to open in 2027.
According to Dai Bin, president of the China Tourism Academy, the diverse offerings, robust consumer demand, and favorable business climate are key drivers. He believes that theme parks in Shanghai and throughout China have the potential to unlock a substantial theme park economy.
Building a theme park typically involves investments of billions of yuan or more. However, owners can recover these costs through annual consumption. Theme parks also generate thousands of jobs and stimulate the entire supply chain.
Dai Bin anticipates that Shanghai will evolve into a new cultural and creative center. He sees it becoming a focal point for theme parks and a significant region for cultural and tourism development.

Building more entertainment venues won't solve the economic and social problems Shanghai faces. It's just a distraction!

Theme parks are fun, but they won’t fix the underlying issues in our society. Focus should be on improving quality of life, not leisure.
