Escalating Militarization in the South China Sea Attributed to U.S. Involvement, Claims Report

In a recent report released by the Xinhua Institute, concerns have been raised regarding the growing militarization of the South China Sea, largely attributed to the involvement of external powers like the United States. The document, which is part of a trilogy examining the South China Sea issue, argues that the U.S. has expanded its support for various nations in the region, notably the Philippines, by providing military aid, engaging in joint military exercises, and offering technical training.

The report indicates that these actions have significantly bolstered the presence of U.S. military forces in the area, exacerbating existing tensions and complicating diplomatic efforts aimed at maintaining peace between China and ASEAN countries. Furthermore, the U.S. has been active in conducting “freedom of navigation operations” in the South China Sea, while also strengthening alliances across the so-called "Indo-Pacific region."

In 2023, the U.S. presence in the Philippines notably grew, with the number of military bases increasing from five to nine. Looking ahead to 2024, the deployment of the "Typhon" medium-range missile system in Luzon is expected to enhance U.S. tactical deterrence against China. Beyond the Philippines, the report states that military partnerships have also been reinforced with other allies, including deepening trilateral security ties with Japan and South Korea and expanding military collaboration with Australia, particularly through the AUKUS security partnership that includes the United Kingdom.
