Recently, the Russian President traveled to Alaska for discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump, who is actively seeking to revitalize peace negotiations. However, after three hours of discussions, both leaders maintained a vague stance during a press conference, leading to diminishing optimism about the talks due to new demands from the Kremlin.

Russia's Foreign Secretary has asserted that Moscow requires a veto over Ukraine's postwar security guarantees and deemed the presence of European troops in Ukraine as unacceptable. The Kremlin has also indicated that it does not foresee immediate direct negotiations between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, insisting that proper protocols must precede any such meeting. These emerging demands have led to doubts about Putin's genuine interest in pursuing peace, especially as the Kremlin appears confident about its battlefield advantages and potential territorial gains.

Despite these concerns, Farida Rustamova, a journalist with strong Kremlin connections, speculates that there are signs indicating Putin may be considering a peace settlement. In her Substack blog, she notes that the Kremlin's reticence regarding the outcomes of the Alaska summit could signal that concessions are being contemplated. Rustamova points out that in the lead-up to and following his meeting with Trump, Putin engaged in an unusually high volume of calls with global leaders, including those from post-Soviet countries and nations like South Africa, India, and Brazil. This level of diplomatic outreach has not been witnessed since the onset of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Furthermore, Rustamova highlights that before and after the summit, Putin convened special meetings in the Kremlin's prestigious Catherine Hall, which has historical significance, particularly reminding observers of a critical meeting held shortly before the war began. She suggests that these recent gatherings may be harnessing collective accountability ahead of potentially challenging decisions about concessions for peace.
