A veterinarian, known online as @cat_the_vet, shares insights on pet care and breed-specific behaviors. She emphasizes that her preferences are personal and that other owners may be better suited to certain breeds. In a video, she outlined five dog breeds she would not personally own.
First on the list are German Shepherds. While acknowledging their beauty, she highlights their guarding instincts, which can lead to reactivity due to their breeding for suspicion and anxiety. She notes that negative experiences can have a lasting impact on these dogs. Their size, power, and potential challenges make them unsuitable for her. She also avoids flat-faced breeds due to the health issues they often face.
Border Collies, bred for herding, are another breed she would not own. She recognizes their need for constant activity and mental stimulation, which she feels she cannot provide. She observes that many Border Collies kept as pets develop mental health problems because they need a job to do.
Shar Peis, with their distinctive wrinkles, also made the list. She finds the breed unappealing and notes their frequent health problems and behavioral issues, often stemming from pain and discomfort. This leads to them being "grumpy".
Finally, she excludes St. Bernards and other large breeds with excessive jowls, due to their tendency to drool. She finds the amount of slobber overwhelming and not something she wants to deal with.

It’s great that you’re considering the long-term impacts of owning these breeds — responsibility is key in pet ownership.

Not all German Shepherds are reactive! That's a huge generalization and doesn't reflect every dog's personality.

It’s refreshing to see a veterinarian openly discuss their preferences based on experience. Great job!
