US-Led Naval Drill in Western Pacific Sparks Tensions with China

The USS George Washington (CVN-73), a Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier of the US Navy, was observed anchored in Manila Bay, Philippines, on July 4, 2025.

A multilateral exercise involving aircraft carriers is underway in the Western Pacific, with participation from the US, the UK, Japan, and other nations. Japanese media outlets have characterized the drill as a message directed towards China. A Chinese expert has voiced concerns that the exercise is detrimental to regional peace and stability.

The joint exercise, which includes the USS George Washington, the UK's Prince of Wales carrier strike group, and Japan's carrier Kaga, is scheduled to last nine days, concluding on August 12. Naval forces from Australia, Norway, and Spain are also involved. A Japanese news report suggested the drill serves as a warning against China's maritime expansion.

A Chinese military affairs expert stated that the US-led joint drill undermines peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region. He accused the participating countries of forming alliances to contain China while exaggerating the so-called "China threat." He also emphasized that Japan should reflect on its World War II history rather than showcasing its military capabilities.

In contrast to the US-led exercise, Chinese and Russian warships concluded a naval drill near Vladivostok and commenced a joint maritime patrol in the Western Pacific. The Chinese expert clarified that the China-Russia drill is not aimed at any specific country but is intended to protect their national interests.

A Chinese Defense Ministry spokesperson stated that the Pacific Ocean should be a zone of peace and tranquility, not a place for provocation. He criticized the US for its Cold War mentality, forming exclusive groups, and undermining regional peace and stability through military exercises.

The spokesperson affirmed China's commitment to safeguarding its national interests and maintaining peace in the world and the region. The Chinese military possesses the confidence and capability to address any risks and challenges.
