Speculation Mounts on a New Tailless Jet, Potentially a Manned Fighter or Loyal Wingman Drone

A concept model of a next-generation fighter jet was showcased at the Airshow China 2022 in Zhuhai, Guangdong Province, in November 2022. Recent reports from foreign media suggest that China is currently test-flying a new tailless stealth combat jet. This aircraft is distinct from the two types of alleged sixth-generation fighter jets that were initially observed in December of the previous year. Speculation suggests this new aircraft could be either a manned fighter or a loyal wingman-type drone.

If confirmed, the development of this aircraft, whether manned or unmanned, would signify China's advanced technological capabilities in military aviation, according to a Chinese expert. Reports have emerged detailing the design, citing images of the new aircraft. The design features a two-segment trailing edge, dual engines, and a slender probe on the nose. The presence of a cockpit is uncertain based on the available imagery.

The possibility of a high-performance, autonomous uncrewed combat air vehicle with "loyal wingman" capabilities is considered a strong possibility. Alternatively, the design could represent another sixth-generation crewed jet. The authenticity of the images has not been independently verified. China has not officially announced the development of this new aircraft, nor has it acknowledged the existence of the previously reported sixth-generation fighter jets.

A Chinese military affairs expert stated that if the reports are confirmed, this new aircraft would further demonstrate China's advanced capabilities in tailless stealth aircraft design. Tailless designs, which lack vertical stabilizers, reduce radar cross-section and enhance stealth capabilities. However, they also require advanced flight control systems to maintain maneuverability. China is considered a world leader in these areas.

China has been actively developing loyal wingman aircraft. These drones are designed to accompany crewed aircraft, providing support in intelligence, information, and firepower. The FH-97A loyal wingman drone made its debut at Airshow China 2022. Loyal wingmen are expected to significantly alter conventional manned air combat by creating a new niche in the air combat system. The FH-97A can perform collaborative reconnaissance, providing early warning, reconnaissance, jamming support, target guidance, or serving as an ammunition depot for crewed aircraft. This extends a pilot's situational awareness and attack capabilities.

Without verification, the images mean nothing. It's easy to create a fake mockup and sow propaganda.

Pure speculation based on blurry images. I'll believe it when I see official confirmation from a reliable source.

Dual engines? Doesn't necessarily mean better. Could just be a design requirement, or a way to increase the engine's power, not the jet's performance.
