Destanee Aiava's impressive tennis season has reached a new milestone. The Australian player successfully navigated the US Open qualifying rounds, securing her place in the main draw for the second consecutive year.
In a hard-fought match, Aiava, a 25-year-old from Melbourne, triumphed over German player Emma Seidel. The final score was 5-7, 6-1, 7-6 (10-6), decided by a tiebreak. The match lasted for two and a half hours, leaving Aiava visibly emotional after securing her spot in her third Grand Slam tournament of the year.
Aiava faced a challenging opponent in the third qualifying match, going up against the 20-year-old Seidel, who was ranked significantly higher in the world rankings. After losing the first set, Aiava rallied, winning five consecutive games to take the second set. In the decisive final set, she maintained her composure, serving successfully to stay in the match. She then performed well in the tiebreak, serving her tenth ace before Seidel's double fault sealed her victory.
This achievement is particularly encouraging for Aiava, who gained admiration in January for openly discussing her struggles with borderline personality disorder. She had a strong performance in Melbourne, reaching the second round.
Meanwhile, 17-year-old Emerson Jones was unsuccessful in her final qualifying match, losing to Victoria Jiménez Kasintseva. Jones, currently ranked as the world's number two junior, had opportunities in the match but ultimately fell short. Priscilla Hon also advanced to the main draw. However, James Duckworth and Jason Kubler were eliminated.

Borderline personality disorder? Not really relevant to her tennis performance, is it?

I have to be honest; I'm more interested in Emerson Jones' potential.
