The unlikely pairing of George Orwell's "1984" and an Ed Sheeran B-side became a source of solace for Alexei Popyrin, helping him to step away from the pressures of professional tennis. A shock first-round exit at Wimbledon in late June triggered a realization that he needed a break. He felt a sense of detachment he hadn't experienced before, prompting him to seek answers and prioritize his well-being.
Popyrin, along with his fiancée Amy, sought refuge in Bermuda, where he rediscovered his love for reading. He has since immersed himself in books, particularly enjoying the science fiction and fantasy genres. He is currently reading "1984" by George Orwell. This time away allowed him to reconnect with loved ones and find a sense of peace.
The couple also attended an Ed Sheeran concert in Ipswich, a highlight for the long-time fan. Popyrin's favorite Sheeran track is "You Need Me, I Don't Need You."
Despite achieving a career-best ranking this month, 2025 has presented challenges for Popyrin. He experienced a drop in ranking before the US Open, but remains Australia's second-ranked male player. He has also made changes to his coaching team and addressed his mental health. Popyrin believes he is a stronger player now than he was last year, when he secured a significant victory against Novak Djokovic.
Popyrin aims to improve his consistency. He recognizes his ability to perform well in major matches against top players, but acknowledges the need to consistently defeat opponents he should be beating. He is not intimidated by the prospect of facing world number one Jannik Sinner in the second round at Flushing Meadows.
Popyrin believes he is on the right track to finding consistency after addressing burnout. He attributes the issue to the demanding schedule of professional tennis, including the two-week Masters events. He has learned a lot about himself and his approach to his career and is taking a different outlook on it now.

Sounds like he's finding a healthier balance. Good for him!

Who cares about his hobbies? We want to see him win matches!

Maybe if he spent less time in Bermuda and more time on the court...

Career-best ranking? Still not good enough if he's losing.

Too much introspection, not enough practice. Lost focus.

Another athlete pandering to the 'mental health' trend. Weak.
