In Colombia, a tragic wave of violence unfolded on Thursday, with a car bomb explosion and an assault on a police helicopter claiming the lives of at least 17 individuals. President Gustavo Petro has connected these incidents to dissidents from the former Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), highlighting the dangers posed by ongoing criminal activities related to the drug trade.
The helicopter attack resulted in the deaths of at least 12 police officers, who were reportedly en route to an area in Antioquia to destroy coca leaf crops, which are used in cocaine production. Initially, President Petro stated eight officers had been killed; however, Antioquia's Governor Andrés Julián later confirmed that four additional officers had succumbed to their injuries, with three more in critical condition. He noted that a drone was involved in the helicopter's attack, causing a fire in the aircraft.
In a separate incident in Cali, a vehicle filled with explosives detonated near a military aviation school, leading to five fatalities and more than 30 injuries. Details about this explosion from the Colombian air force have yet to be disclosed. Initially, President Petro suspected the Gulf Clan, Colombia's largest active drug cartel, of being behind the helicopter attack in retaliation for a recent cocaine seizure attributed to the group. Following the explosion, authorities arrested a suspected member of the dissident faction responsible for these violent acts.
FARC dissidents, who chose to reject a peace agreement made with the Colombian government in 2016, along with members of the Gulf Clan, are actively involved in the Antioquia region. Coca cultivation has significantly increased in Colombia, with the area under cultivation reaching an unprecedented 253,000 hectares in 2023, as reported by the U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime.

Another day, another instance of the state failing to protect its own. Where is the accountability for these attacks?

How long will it take to confirm the actual perpetrators? Petro is quick to accuse. Let's wait for true reports first.

It is time to crack down on the groups involved in the drug trade. Too many lives have been lost.

So, they take out police to target coca crops related to cocaine. Is this really just about drugs? I smell political maneuvering.
