A severe accident in western New York state has left five individuals dead and dozens more injured after a tour bus they were riding on lost control and overturned on the interstate. The bus was on its way back to New York City with a group of over 50 people, returning from a trip visiting Niagara Falls and the U.S.-Canada border when the incident took place.
New York State Police reported that many passengers, including several children, were hospitalized but thankfully did not sustain serious injuries. The bus, described as a charter, was traveling east on the interstate, approximately midway between Buffalo and Rochester, when it crashed around 12:30 p.m. Eyewitness accounts indicated that some passengers were thrown from the vehicle during the accident, requiring immediate rescue and transport to various hospitals.
Riders aboard the bus represented a diverse group, including individuals from the United States, China, India, the Philippines, and the Middle East, prompting officials to send translators to assist first responders in communicating with the victims. As of this time, the names and ages of those deceased remain undisclosed, and information regarding the injured has yet to be fully detailed.
According to New York State Trooper James O’Callaghan, the bus veered across the median of the interstate, overcorrected, and came to rest on its side against the south shoulder of I-90. Initial investigations suggested that the driver was operating the bus at full speed when the vehicle lost control without impacting any other cars on the roadway.
As the night fell, the investigation into the cause of the crash continued, with police suspecting that distraction on the part of the driver played a significant role. The driver of the bus, who survived the incident, is currently cooperating with investigators to determine the exact circumstances leading to the crash.
At a medical center in Buffalo, officials reported treating a total of 24 patients from the crash, with several in critical conditions requiring intensive care. Samuel D. Cloud, the chief medical officer at the facility, noted that the scale of trauma patients arising from a single event was unprecedented in his long career. As responders managed the situation, Interstate 90 was temporarily closed, although westbound traffic was allowed to resume later that evening. Eastbound traffic was expected to follow soon after as the scene was cleared.

This is another example of why these long bus trips can sometimes become safety concerns. They need to have more frequent rest stops and safety checks.

I'm glad to hear that the local medical center is prepared to handle such a chaotic situation. Hoping for positive outcomes.

The fact that some of the people were on a bus tour of the area speaks volumes! I hope they had a great trip before the accident.

Thinking of all the people who will be changed forever by this. It's a reminder of how precious life is.

How long until the other person's insurance wants to start pointing the finger at the other side?
