A footballer from Victoria's north-west has faced immediate contract termination after being charged with an alleged assault. The player was granted bail with the requirement to stay at a residence in Footscray, located in Melbourne's western suburbs.
On Thursday, the Red Cliffs Football Netball Club (RCFNC) issued a statement indicating their awareness of the allegations against the player, identified as Mr. Johnson. The club announced their decision to part ways with him effective immediately due to the severity of the charges. They offered help with counselling services, but Mr. Johnson informed them that he was already receiving support in Robinvale.
The RCFNC expressed that the charge was serious and condemned violence in any context as unacceptable. They stated that there is zero tolerance for such behavior within their organization and society. Furthermore, the Sunraysia Football Netball League (SFNL) expressed full backing for the club’s actions, emphasizing that violence is incompatible with the values upheld by the league and the sporting community.
Additionally, the league mentioned that Mr. Johnson was already serving a two-match suspension, which means he would not participate in the finals campaign for the Tigers. The forward had scored 23 goals during the season after transferring from Robinvale-Euston Football Netball Club earlier in the year. He is scheduled to appear in court next month to address the charges.

This kind of response could drive players away from the sport. Where's the support for the accused?

Firing someone accused of a crime is extreme. What if the accusation isn’t true?
