Bills Save Josh Allen for Regular Season While Addressing Depth Chart Concerns

The Buffalo Bills have decided to rest quarterback Josh Allen for a third straight preseason game, focusing on keeping the NFL's reigning MVP healthy for the regular season. Coach Sean McDermott has confirmed that Allen will not play in Saturday's preseason finale against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, emphasizing his responsibility to protect the quarterback and the overall team.

This marks a notable shift as, aside from 2020, this is the first time in eight years that Allen has not played in a preseason game. Fortunately, he has still had the opportunity to work extensively with the starters during joint practices with the Chicago Bears and in situational drills at training camp. However, uncertainties remain in areas such as the safety position opposite Taylor Rapp and the competition for backup receivers.

In particular, second-year safety Cole Bishop is in contention for the starting role but faces tough competition from Damar Hamlin. Bishop, a second-round pick, missed significant time in the previous year's training camp due to injury and is currently trying to overcome a quadriceps issue that hampered his performance in his recent preseason outing. Coach McDermott expressed confidence in Bishop's potential, noting that gaining experience through repetitions is crucial for a player in his position.

Receiver competition is also heating up, with injuries complicating the situation. The starting roles appear secure for Khalil Shakir, Keon Coleman, and Joshua Palmer, leaving Curtis Samuel, Elijah Moore, and Laviska Shenault vying for the remaining roster spots ahead of the NFL's cutdown day. Samuel's health is a concern after he dealt with various injuries throughout camp, although he played a significant role in last season's playoffs. McDermott acknowledged that Samuel's performance this weekend would be critical for his standing.

Shakir, recovering from a high ankle sprain incurred earlier in August, is expected to return to practice soon, boosting Allen's confidence that their chemistry from last season can be quickly reestablished. While not disclosing names, McDermott mentioned that some starters will be participating in the upcoming game. Additionally, former Bills receiver Gabe Davis is in Buffalo seeking a new team after being released by the Jaguars, as he continues to recover from a knee injury. Meanwhile, there is no update on the status of starting cornerback Tre’Davious White after he was carted off with a leg injury during practice.

Preseason is an opportunity window for others to shine, plus we will never lose the chance to win with Allen!

He needs to play even if for one quarter. It's more dangerous to prepare for a long season without practicing in the playoffs.

Protecting him from what? It's preseason! Let him play a quarter, at least!

Why risk injury to your franchise QB in a meaningless game? I fully support this!

Risk of injury is always there, but you cannot stop development, especially after new players joined through draft.
