At a special ceremony held at City Hall on Wednesday, Luguentz Dort, who has reached the pinnacle of success in the NBA with the Oklahoma City Thunder, was recognized for his achievements. Dort had the honor of signing the city’s “Livre d’Or,” as Mayor Valérie Plante celebrated his contributions both on the basketball court and to the local community. In her address, she praised his journey from Montreal-Nord, highlighting the hard work and determination that have shaped his career. Plante expressed pride in welcoming an athlete who embodies the spirit of goodwill.
Family, friends, and local sports figures gathered to support Dort at the event, where he expressed gratitude for the recognition, stating how significant Montreal is to him. He recalled a time when many Americans were unaware of Montreal's existence, but now, thanks to his visibility, that has changed. Meeker Guerrier, the event’s master of ceremonies, emphasized Dort’s role as a positive example for the Haitian-Canadian community, which is prominent in Montreal North.
Dort's achievements include his pivotal role in leading the Thunder to an NBA championship victory on June 22. The celebration at City Hall was made even more special with the presence of the Larry O’Brien trophy, which was brought along by the team's mascot, Rumble. A longstanding supporter of his community, Dort has been active through his charity foundation, Maizon Dort. During the early pandemic days of 2020, he contributed significantly by donating sneakers and meals to healthcare workers at the Jewish General Hospital. Additionally, he worked on improving the basketball courts at St-Laurent Park in Montreal North, where his love for the sport began, with an official unveiling occurring last year.
In 2024, Dort also participated in initiatives to raise awareness about the dangers of vaping among the youth. To wrap up the celebrations after this recognition, Dort is set to partake in a homecoming parade through the Montreal North borough on Thursday.

While Luguentz Dort's achievements are commendable, it feels like the city is just using him for publicity. Does the ceremony really benefit anyone?

Go Dort! This recognition is only fitting for someone who has worked so hard to uplift both his sport and community!

I wonder how much of this celebration is genuine versus orchestrated for PR. Sports figures get way too much attention.

Great, he signed a book. But how about more tangible commitments to the community instead of just words?
