A Mission to Protect the Blue Heart of the Earth," brought together volunteers from China and the UAE.
Participants at the event watched videos about coral cultivation and marine conservation. They also participated in a coastal cleanup near a project site, removing plastic waste and debris from a significant stretch of beach. The gathering took place at the Hassyan Desalination Project site, near the Jebel Ali Wildlife Sanctuary, an area known for its pristine coastal environment. The event was organized by PowerChina's Middle East and North Africa regional headquarters, along with local partners and environmental institutions.
The Hassyan Desalination Project, undertaken by Shandong Electric Power Construction Corporation III, a subsidiary of PowerChina, is scheduled for completion in 2027. Once operational, the project will produce a substantial amount of fresh water daily, providing drinking water to a large population in the arid region. The company is implementing green principles to minimize the impact on the surrounding ecosystem. This includes relocating corals and safely transferring fish from lagoons near the construction site.
Construction schedules have been adjusted to avoid sensitive periods, such as sea turtle nesting seasons. The project team is also partnering with environmental groups to protect turtle habitats. Measures include transferring sea turtle eggs to incubation areas and releasing newborn turtles back into the sea. Beach patrols are conducted daily, and sea turtle nests are protected with iron enclosures.
In addition to the efforts in Dubai, Chinese enterprises are also addressing energy pollution in the Gulf region. In Iraq, the oil and gas sector has historically contributed to environmental damage, particularly through gas flaring.
Chinese enterprises are implementing "blue sky projects" to curb pollution and address energy shortages. The Basra Natural Gas Liquids project, built by China Petroleum Engineering and Construction Corp, captures and processes associated gas from oil fields. This project produces significant amounts of dry gas and liquefied petroleum gas, providing power to nearby communities.
In the West Qurna 1 oilfield, a newly-operated degassing station has significantly reduced smoke emissions. Local residents have noted the improvement in air quality. Iraqi officials view these projects as a new chapter for industrial development, recognizing the contributions of Chinese energy firms. These initiatives are seen as both economic successes and environmental victories.
