The 2025 Chengdu World Games is set to conclude this Sunday evening at the Chengdu International Friendship Pavilion. At a press conference held by the organizing committee, it was revealed that wushu and dragon boat racing will remain part of the competitive lineup for future World Games.
As the event draws to a close, a total of 233 gold medals have been presented to athletes representing 81 different nations and regions, alongside the breaking of 18 world records. The Games also boasted tremendous attendance, with ticket sales surpassing 220,000, and sports such as gymnastics, Muay Thai, and wushu emerged as fan favorites, resulting in sold-out competitions.
Jose Perurena, the President of the International World Games Association (IWGA), affirmed that wushu and dragon boat racing will be maintained as official sports in upcoming editions of the World Games. Additionally, Xu Xingguo, the Executive Vice President and Secretary-General of the Chengdu Games Executive Committee, expressed that the city aims to strengthen its position as a prominent center for high-profile sporting events on the global stage.
Cheerleaders Alison Hoeft and Sydney Martin from the USA shared their enjoyable experience during the competitions, highlighting the positive atmosphere present in Chengdu. This evening's closing ceremony will mark the transition of the Games’ hosting responsibilities to Karlsruhe, Germany, which will host the 13th edition in 2029.
