Phoebe Litchfield, an emerging star in cricket, recently captivated audiences with her performances in The Hundred, an exciting 100-ball tournament. This talented left-hander, just 22 years old and hailing from Australia, found her stride during a crucial week of the competition, showcasing her skills at three prestigious English Test grounds.
After having a sluggish start in the tournament, Litchfield delivered a match-winning unbeaten 59 against Birmingham Phoenix at her home ground, Headingley, marking her first half-century of the year. At the weekend, she further demonstrated her prowess by scoring a quickfire 31 against Manchester Originals. However, it was Wednesday’s match at Lord’s that highlighted her talents most effectively, where she scored an impressive 55 not out. Her innings included a dazzling array of switch hits, making it quite challenging for the London Spirit's bowlers to contain her batting.
In that standout performance, Litchfield struck 10 boundaries in just 38 balls and, together with teammate Annabel Sutherland, who contributed 29 not out off 21, led the Northern Superchargers to a comfortable eight-wicket win with 34 balls remaining. After the match, Litchfield expressed her joy in being part of a team outing to see Michael Jackson's musical the night before, organized by her captain, Hollie Armitage.
Teammate Kate Cross noted how Litchfield seemed to have rediscovered her joy for the game, sharing that after her successful innings against Phoenix, Litchfield mentioned aiming to have fun like she did in her first year in 2023 when she felt no pressure. Former England captain Nasser Hussain called her a "fabulous talent" and acknowledged her ability to play a diverse range of shots, while Cross remarked that Litchfield has the unique gift of switch-hitting.
Meanwhile, Sutherland also had a significant impact both in her innings and in her bowling performance, helping restrict the Spirit to just 90 runs with figures of 3-20. The Spirit’s top scorer was Georgia Redmayne, who made 29 runs off 29 balls. In other matches, Australian Jess Jonassen shone for Welsh Fire, taking four wickets, but her team ultimately suffered a defeat against the Southern Brave, who remain undefeated.

The narrative around her sounds like a manufactured story. I’ll believe it when I see long-term success.

The 100-ball tournament is still a new concept. You can't compare any player’s success here to traditional formats.

Nice highlights, but can she perform under pressure in crucial matches? That’s what truly matters.
