A popular goat's cheese product is being recalled in Northern Ireland due to potential contamination with dangerous bacteria. Horgan’s Delicatessen Supplies has initiated a recall of its SPAR Chèvre Goats Cheese after tests revealed the possible presence of Listeria monocytogenes. This bacterium can cause serious illness, particularly in individuals with weakened immune systems.
The affected product is the 100g pack with a use-by date of August 12, 2025. The cheese was distributed to various SPAR outlets throughout Northern Ireland. SPAR estimates that approximately 293 stores stock the product.
SPAR has issued a customer notice urging consumers to return the affected cheese to the store for a full refund. No receipt is required for the return. The notice emphasizes the potential harm of consuming the contaminated product.
Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, an infection that often presents with flu-like symptoms. These symptoms include high fever, muscle aches, chills, nausea, and diarrhea. In rare cases, the infection can lead to more severe complications, such as meningitis.
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has confirmed the recall and issued a food alert. The FSA's warning highlights the symptoms of listeriosis and identifies vulnerable groups, including the elderly, pregnant women, infants, and those with compromised immune systems. Consumers who have purchased the product are advised not to consume it and to return it to the point of purchase for a refund.

This is just another overreaction. People should be able to take responsibility for what they consume.
