Grigor Dimitrov, a three-time Grand Slam semi-finalist, has withdrawn from the upcoming US Open. This decision comes just over a month after he sustained a chest muscle injury during a match against Jannik Sinner at Wimbledon.
Dimitrov's withdrawal from the All England Club on July 7th, where he had initially won the first two sets, represents the fifth consecutive Grand Slam tournament where he has been unable to finish a match. This unfortunate streak includes the Australian Open in January, the French Open in May, and last year's Wimbledon and US Open.
In the previous US Open, Dimitrov retired during the quarterfinals while trailing Frances Tiafoe. He has previously reached the semi-finals at the US Open in 2019, the Australian Open in 2017, and Wimbledon in 2014.
Dimitrov's career-high ranking was No. 3, and he is currently ranked No. 21. His absence from the tournament allows Alejandro Tabilo to enter the men's singles bracket, which begins on August 24th. Brandon Holt is next in line to potentially join the draw if another player withdraws. Holt notably defeated Taylor Fritz at Flushing Meadows in 2022, and his mother is former US Open champion Tracy Austin.

At this rate, he's going to miss the whole season. Time for a break, Grigor.

He always seems to struggle in big moments. Does he really want it that bad?

He's shown resilience before. I’m confident he’ll come back from this!
