A collision occurred between a yacht and a cargo ship in the waters off southern Japan on Wednesday. Authorities have confirmed one fatality and reported several individuals missing as a result of the incident.
The captain of a gravel carrier, weighing 492 tons, contacted the Japan Coast Guard to report the collision. The incident took place near Hoto Island in Oita Prefecture, according to coast guard spokesperson Nanaka Yoshida.
Emergency services recovered one person around 10 a.m. The individual, identified as 70-year-old Makoto Yamamoto from Oita, was transported to a hospital in a state of cardiac arrest and later confirmed dead.
The coast guard is actively searching for additional individuals believed to have been aboard the yacht. However, details regarding the yacht's specifications and the exact number of people on board remain unknown.
