Liverpool's Mohamed Salah has voiced criticism of UEFA's tribute to Suleiman Al-Obeid, a prominent Palestinian footballer known as the "Palestinian Pele." Salah questioned the omission of details surrounding Al-Obeid's death, specifically the circumstances and location. UEFA's initial post on X described Al-Obeid as a talent who inspired hope, but failed to mention that he was killed by Israel.
The Palestine Football Association reported that Al-Obeid, aged 41, was killed by an Israeli strike while waiting for humanitarian aid in southern Gaza. He was a father of five and a celebrated figure in Palestinian football, having played 24 official matches for the national team and scored two goals. Palestinian officials have stated that over 800 Palestinian athletes have been killed by Israel since October 7, 2023.
In other news, the Sturgeon Moon, the last full moon of summer, illuminated the night skies over Istanbul, Türkiye, on August 9, 2025. The moon's golden glow provided a stunning backdrop for landmarks like the Galata Tower, attracting stargazers and photographers.
Meanwhile, in London, a large demonstration took place on Saturday, with thousands marching against the ongoing situation in Gaza. Parents participating in the protest expressed their concerns about the killing of children and families, and their determination to speak out.
Furthermore, new footage released on August 10 by the human rights group B’Tselem shows Israeli settler Yinon Levi shooting and killing Palestinian activist Awdah al-Hathaleen. Al-Hathaleen was recording the destruction of Palestinian property by illegal settlers when he was killed.
Finally, Al Jazeera correspondents Anas al Sharif and Mohamed Qraiqea were killed on August 10, along with three other journalists, in an Israeli strike targeting a journalists' tent near al Shifa Hospital in western Gaza City, according to the Gaza Media Office.

Athletes should share their voice, and Salah is doing what many of us wish we could.

Salah should stick to football and leave politics out of it! UEFA is just trying to honor a player.

This isn't the time to create tensions. UEFA did what they could to honor a great player.
