The Philippine government reported a collision in the South China Sea involving a Chinese navy vessel and a Chinese coast guard ship. The incident unfolded while a Philippine patrol boat was being pursued. Manila released video footage documenting the confrontation.
The collision occurred near Scarborough Shoal, a disputed territory. The Philippine coast guard was escorting boats delivering aid to local fishermen when the incident took place.
According to the Philippine statement, the China Coast Guard ship, identified as CCG 3104, was pursuing the Filipino coast guard vessel BRP Suluan at high speed. The Chinese vessel then executed a risky maneuver, colliding with a People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy warship. The impact caused significant damage to the forecastle of the China Coast Guard vessel, rendering it unseaworthy.
A spokesperson for the Chinese coast guard acknowledged a confrontation on Monday but did not mention a collision. The spokesperson stated that the China Coast Guard took "necessary measures" to drive away the Philippine vessels, including monitoring, pressing, blocking, and controlling them.

What happened near Scarborough Shoal is unacceptable. China's expansionist policies must be challenged.
