Mark Cancian, a retired US Marine Corps colonel, has raised concerns about the adequacy of preparations for the impending talks regarding Ukraine. He noted that typically, summits have extensive agreements finalized by staff prior to the leaders' arrival, allowing for a smooth handshake at the conclusion. However, he believes that this has not happened in this case, as there seems to be considerable confusion leading up to the discussions, leaving key aspects of the agreement unclear.
Cancian, now a senior adviser at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, warns that if Ukraine is sidelined in these negotiations, their national interests might be compromised. He pointed out the challenges facing Ukraine in the war, mentioning that former President Trump has a history of pressuring Ukraine into agreements that may not be in their favor. Furthermore, Cancian noted Ukraine's recent military strategies, such as attacking Russian airfields and military sites, aimed at hindering Moscow’s progress and compelling them to consider negotiations. Despite these efforts, he concluded that it does not seem to be sufficient to convince President Putin that pursuing peace is preferable to continuing the conflict.

His perspective sheds light on what could go wrong. We need to advocate for clearer preparations.

If Putin senses weakness or confusion, it will only embolden him. We can't let that happen!

His statement doesn’t even consider that other parties have interests too. It’s not just about Ukraine!
