Changzhou Changshun Comprehensive Energy Service recently received a payment of 18.38 yuan ($2.56) from the State Grid Changzhou Power Supply Company. This payment represents the first financial settlement for V2G (vehicle-to-grid) power generation in Jiangsu province. This achievement marks Changzhou's pioneering role in establishing a complete commercial framework for V2G vehicle-grid interaction within the province.
Huang Wei, deputy director of the operations and maintenance center at Changzhou Changshun Comprehensive Energy Service, expressed that while the initial amount is modest, receiving actual financial compensation has instilled confidence in the commercial viability and widespread adoption of V2G technology. The team anticipates increasing participation in vehicle-grid interaction in the future.
V2G technology allows electric vehicles to function as "mobile power banks." They can draw power from the grid during periods of low demand and supply power back to the grid during peak demand. This technology benefits the grid by stabilizing power fluctuations, improving stability, and increasing the integration of renewable energy sources. It also provides economic advantages to operators and vehicle owners involved.
The Jiangsu Development and Reform Commission issued a notice at the end of April, which provided a framework for V2G power generation settlements. This notice allows independently installed charging and discharging facilities with the capability to send power back to the grid to participate in vehicle-grid interaction. They can respond to peak demand, discharge power, and earn profits based on specified pricing.
On July 18, three electric buses discharged 47 kilowatt-hours of power to the grid through three V2G chargers at the Changzhou Zhonglou Vehicle-Grid Interaction Smart Charging Station. The combined capacity of these chargers was 360 kilowatts. The electricity fee income was calculated at 18.38 yuan, based on the standard grid electricity price for coal-fired power generation in Jiangsu province.
Li Min, head of the marketing department at State Grid Changzhou Power Supply Company, stated that the completion of this settlement is a significant milestone for V2G power generation in Jiangsu. It also signifies a new step in supporting the development of vehicle-grid interaction by State Grid Jiangsu Power Supply.
Changzhou, as the only city in Jiangsu selected for vehicle-grid interaction applications, plans to promote the widespread adoption of V2G. This will be achieved through initiatives such as residential pilot projects, large-scale discharging activities, and public education and outreach programs.

Can we trust these figures? They look too good to be true for such a fledgling technology.

Promoting V2G is great, but it won’t solve the larger issues within the energy sector.
