Istanbul Protests and Supermoon Shine Amidst Gaza Crisis

In Istanbul, tens of thousands of pro-Palestine demonstrators protested the ongoing situation in Gaza, where a severe humanitarian crisis and starvation are unfolding. The demonstration, held on August 9th, began at Beyazit Square after evening prayers. Participants marched towards the historic Ayasofya Mosque, carrying lanterns to symbolize hope amidst the suffering.

Rafiq Ahmed Fris, one of the first Muslim converts in the Netherlands, shared his perspective on the growing anti-Muslim sentiment in the country. He noted the resurgence of far-right ideologies, a trend not seen since the Second World War.

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah criticized UEFA's tribute to Suleiman Al-Obeid, a Palestinian footballer known as the "Palestinian Pele." UEFA's tribute failed to acknowledge that Al-Obeid was killed by Israel while waiting for humanitarian aid in Gaza. Salah questioned UEFA's omission, prompting the Palestine Football Association to clarify that Al-Obeid, a father of five and a prominent figure in Palestinian football, was killed in an Israeli strike. Palestinian officials report that Israel has killed over 800 Palestinian athletes since October 7, 2023.

On the same night, the supermoon illuminated the night skies over Istanbul. The Sturgeon Moon, the last full moon of summer, rose over the city, appearing full for two consecutive nights. Its golden light bathed landmarks like the Galata Tower, creating a stunning spectacle that attracted stargazers and photographers.
