Argentina is actively pursuing the opportunity to have its national football team play a friendly match in China as part of its strategy to enhance connections between the two nations ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Philippe Oudinot, who serves as the subdirector of Argentina's National Agency for High-Performance Sports (ENARD), shared insights during a recent sports development forum in Beijing. He mentioned that discussions with officials from the Argentine Embassy in China have been focused on these plans, including the possibility of a match being scheduled for October.
The Argentine team had previously played a friendly match against Australia in June 2023 in Beijing, marking its first international appearance outside Argentina after winning the World Cup in 2022. Although over 51,000 fans attended the event, the absence of superstar Lionel Messi during a subsequent friendly with his club in Hong Kong led to disappointment among Chinese supporters, sparking controversy and resulting in the cancellation of two planned friendlies. Local sports authorities cited preparedness issues for these cancellations and have since tightened regulations governing matches involving foreign teams in China.
Amid these challenges, Oudinot emphasized Argentina's commitment to fostering not only matches but also deeper sporting collaborations, including exchanges of knowledge among coaches and referees. He noted that Argentina has a strong grassroots football base that can be leveraged for professional growth and acknowledged the potential benefits of learning from China, particularly in women's football and advancements in sports technology. Oudinot also touched on the broader role of the government in sports, arguing that it should facilitate the development of a comprehensive sports ecosystem rather than simply providing all the solutions.

More money means more resources for the football development! This is great news!

Messi's absence last time made the fans feel cheated. Argentina team playing now in China sounds like a bad joke.

It's good to see a focus on deepening collaborations, not just the games!

This whole thing reeks of opportunism. The team should be training, not playing friendly matches thousands of miles away.

I hope this time fans will have the chance to see Messi, because I want to support the Argentina team.

Here we go again... After the Messi fiasco, are they really thinking China is ready for another Argentina friendly?
