Australian Treasurer Jim Chalmers stated on Thursday that the formal recognition of a Palestinian state by Australia is a matter of inevitability. He expressed his desire for the federal government to officially recognize Palestine. Chalmers emphasized that the timing of this recognition is the key consideration.
Chalmers acknowledged the positive international developments regarding Palestinian recognition but declined to specify a timeframe for Australia's decision. He highlighted several obstacles that need to be addressed before recognition can occur, including the handling of hostages and ensuring no role for Hamas.
His appearance on ABC television preceded an announcement by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney regarding Canada's intention to recognize Palestinian statehood at the upcoming UN General Assembly. Later, Chalmers mentioned on Sky News television that Australia has been in discussions with other nations sharing similar views on Palestinian recognition.
Furthermore, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, along with counterparts from 14 other countries, including Canada, issued a joint statement reaffirming their commitment to a two-state solution for Palestine. The ABC also reported that Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is facing increasing pressure from within his own Labor Party to recognize Palestinian statehood.

This push for recognition seems to ignore the complexities of the situation. It’s naive and dangerous.

Recognition of Palestine may legitimize aggression. We should be more cautious in our foreign policy.

Recognition is inevitable, and delaying it will not solve issues; it will only prolong suffering. Kudos to Chalmers for his views!
