Landslide in Guangzhou Causes Damage and Traps Residents Amid Heavy Rain

On August 6, 2025, a landslide in the Baiyun district of Guangzhou, located in Guangdong Province, resulted from several days of intense rainfall, damaging numerous houses and trapping 14 residents. As of the latest reports, nine individuals have been successfully rescued, although two people have been confirmed dead and seven others are injured, with five still unaccounted for and under ongoing rescue efforts.

Authorities have mobilized disaster response teams, including emergency management, fire and rescue, public security, and housing departments, to tackle the emergency. The National Development and Reform Commission has stepped in by allocating 100 million yuan (approximately $13.91 million) from the central budget to assist Guangdong Province in recovery efforts. These funds are intended for repairing and reconstructing essential infrastructure such as roads, water supply systems, and medical facilities, to help restore normalcy in the affected regions.

Reports indicate that the heavy rains that preceded the landslide marked the city's most severe rainfall of the year, with the event rated as an "extremely severe" storm—recorded as the strongest August rainstorm in history. Following the emergency, China's national commission for disaster prevention has triggered a Level-IV emergency response in the province, sending a team to coordinate local relief efforts and ensure the well-being of those impacted by the flood.
